Las Vegas was first settled by Spanish traders who were seeking a shorter route to Los Angeles, so this oasis became a refuge for early travelers. Before the discovery of this well-watered valley, the journey overland had claimed so many lives it was called “Jornada de Muerte,” or journey of death. The town has had a checkered career since Brigham Young sent a group of young Mormons here in 1815, to build a fort and teach the Paiute Indians farming skills. That fort still stands, right on the corner of Washington Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The town got a new lease on life when the railroad went through in the late 1800’s. But its real destiny was realized in 1931 when the city fathers relaxed the gaming laws to provide workers from the nearby Hoover Dam with an entertaining escape from the dangers of construction work. It became a good time town. It’s still a good time town. In fact, it’s the most popular, the most visited city in America. And for good reason.
It’s a town with a something for everybody . Of course for many, the fun of Las Vegas is still the challenge of beating the house. There are all the classic casino games of 21, Craps, Keno, Poker, Baccarat, and Roulette played here. Also, wagering on Sports and Horse Racing is offered by most of the casinos along with games imported from the Orient, like Sic Bo, Pai Gow and Pai Gow Poker. Many of the casinos offer free gaming instruction, but, you should remember that the rules can vary from casino to casino.
Interestingly, however, so many Vegas visitors these days are families, and that has revitalized the town. Changed the atmosphere. Many of the shows here are just good wholesome entertainment for all ages. If you have teenagers, they’ll never forget seeing an Elton John Concert. With over 200 million record sales, 29 consecutive top 40 hits and untold numbers of awards, Elton John appeals to all age groups. He’s under contract to perform at Caesars Palace for a number of years. Many here say however that Celine Dion is the most accomplished performer to appear on the strip for many years and she’s also playing at Caesars. But for a unique family experience, take an early morn “chopper” flight and watch the colors of the Grand Canyon come to life under a desert sunrise. You can actually have breakfast in the Canyon!
Or you may want to just recharge your batteries. If so, you can spend a week being treated like royalty, never doing anything more energetic than deciding what to have for dinner. It’s up to you. And you’ll certainly be relaxing in comfort!
