So did Ernest Hemingway, who loved the bohemian atmosphere of Key West. A fun, creative city with a sense of community. And Lou Gehrig. Tennessee Williams. Harry Truman.
They all came, so you will be walking in the footsteps of many well-known Americans. But be warned. Most just kept coming back. Many didn’t leave at all. You can still stroll past the house that Hemingway built. And there is still a vibrant artist’s community here where you can discover tomorrow’s fine art treasures at today’s prices. Or gaze on yesterday’s fabled treasures from the galleon Atocha.
As Hemingway found, there is a strong sense of community at Key West. A welcoming, tolerant community, and many gather at Mallory Dock in the evenings to watch the greatest painting of all. A Key West sunset. With a support cast of jugglers, mimes, musicians and street artists this is a must event for new arrivals. A prelude to the night, when the streets, filled with sidewalk, alfresco cafes, out-door bars, legendary pubs and internationally acclaimed restaurants, burst into life. Key West loves a party. And every night is a celebration.
During the day you can explore a unique American architectural and tropical, botanical treasure. Take a taxi, a tour train, a trolley or bicycle----you can even walk, everything is so close----and you’ll see that even on the smallest lanes locals have restored old wooden houses and planted lush tropical gardens and trees. Go to the historic Bahama Village area where new eateries have popped up everywhere. Hemingway loved to come here. To arm wrestle and interact with the Bahamian migrants who arrived here during the 19 th century. And while you’re in Key West you must visit the gingerbread mansions and you’ll fall in love with the conch houses on the palm-lined streets. Crime is very low---- US 1 is the only road out----so enjoy your walk in the evening cool.
But no tale of Key West is complete without a mention of the ever-present ocean. Whether you snorkel, dive, are a fisherman or an eco tourist this is paradise. This is the sport fisherman’s capital of the world. A marine wonderland with something for everybody.
