Jamaica, located just south of Cuba, is the third largest island in the Caribbean and is only an hour’s flight from Miami. This extremely fertile island lies East to West and is geographically diverse with a central backbone of high, forested mountains and hills sloping to coastal plains, coral cliffs, and the fine sandy beaches that ring the 500-mile coastline. There is good rainfall, and the 120 rivers and streams that flow from the elevated areas down to the sea, encompass some of the most celebrated cascades and waterfalls on the earth. Surrounding the island are the famed coral reefs, a recreational haven for snorkelers and divers and home to a rich diversity of sea creatures. It is the experience of a lifetime to look down through a 100 feet of crystal clear water and see richly hued, mushroom shaped coral formations through clouds of brightly colored reef fish. And it’s an experience anybody from 8 to 80 can enjoy. Regardless of fitness.
First visited by Columbus in 1494, the island was a part of the Spanish Main ----a series of outlying forts used to protect shipping----until taken by the British in 1655. By then it had become a haven for buccaneers and pirates. Famous pirates like Henry Morgan operated out of Jamaica, and some say buried his treasure on a secluded beach here. The first thing the British Governor did after England established sovereignty was to make a pact with Henry and the other pirates. They could have safe haven on Jamaica if they raided Spanish ships only. And so it was. The pirates received a pardon from the British crown and made their home in Port Royal, described by visitors as the wickedest place on earth. It was a rollicking, frolicking, boisterous good time pirate town filled with treasure and booty, taken from Spanish Galleons returning to Europe. Eventually Henry Morgan was made Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica and gained an air of respectability. Fascinating stories. Fascinating place, this Jamaica.
